Resolution Season
By: Elena Jamscek
Now that Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is right around the corner we are eating everything in sight because it’s so good; our waist bands are paying the price. It’s coming to that time of the year when we all make that New Year’s resolution to lose the weight. I know I have made it several times and not quite stuck it out. But we can do it! It’s just making a plan and sticking to it. Yes it is the hardest plan you will ever make and the hardest plan you will ever try and keep but it is do-able.
First commitment to make is about the food. Yes the delicious food. It has to be watched. I’m not saying count calories and I’m not saying deprive yourself. I’m saying make conscious choices. Complex carbs instead of simple carbs : this means whole wheat bread instead of white, brown rice instead of white, whole wheat pasta instead of white (and yes they sell it at the store and so does Olive Garden). Choosing a complex carb instead of simple carbs provide you with much needed fiber and much less unneeded sugars. It’s fine to snack during the day but again make it a conscious decision of what you put in your mouth. Don’t eat carbs as a snack. Snacks should be protein with fruits or veggies. And lastly make an effort to not eat after 7pm. Late night eating does not allow your body to use the food as it should be and it just turns to extra weight.
Second commitment is to exercise. When I say that, I am not talking hours at the gym. I’m saying get some cardio in, like 15-20 minutes walking on the treadmill; that is just good for your heart. But using your biggest muscle groups is what burns the most calories. Lifting light weights is where that will be happening. It is also good for your bones and decreases your risk for osteoporosis.
